Tornado Facts

About 1,000 tornadoes hit the United States every year. Most of touch down in America’s Plains states, an area known as Tornado Alley, includes Kansas. Tornadoes, however, can occur almost anywhere in the United States.

Supercell tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3:00 and 9:00 in the evening. Tornado warnings have a 13-minute average lead time and a 70% false alarm rate. Tornadoes can last from several seconds to more than an hour, though most tornadoes last less than 10 minutes.

Tornadoes are known to carry heavy objects, such as cars, up to a mile. Lighter objects, like books and clothing up to 20 miles and light objects, like paper up to 200 miles. Tornadoes are devastating and have the power to destroy anything in their path. In addition, buildings well outside the direct path of the tornado can sustain significant damage from the severe storm that generates the tornado.
